Forschungsthema
Laughter in speech development
Projektbeschreibung
Changes in the coordination of breathing and vocalization in laughter are considered a milestone in both human evolution and infant speech development. Specifically, infants may initially laugh on both inhalation and exhalation, and later laugh predominantly on exhalation. However, empirical data on respiration and laughter in infancy remain scarce: most previous work has relied on acoustic analysis or on listeners’ perception of which breathing phase a laugh occurs in. The current project aims to close this gap. We have recorded 120 sessions with infants aged 6 to 14 months, capturing acoustics, respiration, and body motion in natural interactions. During my stay at the Forschungskolleg in Bad Homburg, I will analyse these coordination patterns in detail.
Wissenschaftliches Profil
